Donna Vekic Makes Grand Slam History
Croatian Player Reaches First Semifinal
Vekic rallies to defeat qualifier Lulu Sun
Donna Vekic of Croatia made history on Wednesday by reaching the first Grand Slam semifinal of her career. The 28-year-old rallied from a set deficit to defeat qualifier Lulu Sun of New Zealand 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at the ongoing Australian Open.
Vekic, who is currently ranked 34th in the world, had never advanced beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament before. Her best previous result was a quarterfinal appearance at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.
In the semifinals, Vekic will face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who defeated American 19th seed Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-1 earlier on Wednesday.
Vekic's victory is a testament to her hard work and dedication. She has been working on her game with her coach, Borna Coric, and the results are starting to show. Vekic is now one of the most promising young players on the WTA Tour, and she has the potential to achieve even greater things in the future.
