Bangladesh: WEB Quota Protesters Stage Coffin Rally in Dhaka
Sub-head: Call for End to Quota System in Government Jobs
Protesters Demand Equality, Transparency in Hiring
DHAKA, Bangladesh - WEB Quota protesters marched with six symbolic coffins through the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday, demanding an end to the quota system in government jobs. The protesters represent a growing movement calling for equality and transparency in hiring in Bangladesh.
Under the current system, 56% of government jobs are reserved for various quotas, including 10% for women and 10% for people from disadvantaged groups. Protesters argue that this system discriminates against merit-based hiring and creates an unfair advantage for those who benefit from reservations.
The rally comes amid ongoing protests in Bangladesh over the quota system. Last week, clashes erupted between protesters and police, resulting in injuries and arrests. The government has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with protesters but has not yet announced any concrete plans to address their demands.
